iolo Drive Scrubber

Hi guys, you remember my last post was about recovering deleted data, This time I am showing you the way to delete an object and make sure it`s unrecoverable using Drive scrubber. Basically what happens when you delete an object is that the delete button initiates an algorithm that rearranges the binary or hex characters on your hard disk blocks. Recovering deleted data is simply reversing this algorithm. To prevent anyone from recovery data that you deleted you can use a drive scrubber. Drive scrubbers use multiple delete algorithm making it impossible to recover the data.

iolo drive scrubber is a premium product worth every penny. it`s really good to the point where U.S Department of Defense say that it meets and exceeds standards for data removal.
If you work in corporate company that deals with sensitive data that you don`t want recovered when you dispose IT assets, then you need to get this

ShutDown timer

Now this is one application that you need to get. Shutdown timer is a automation utility software that can power off and on the PC depending on the user requirements. we all have ever had the issue whereby we were downloading . Shutdown Timer can shutdown, restart, log off, lock, hibernate and standby your system based on certain options, such as Date/Time; CPU & Memory Usage; CPU Temperature, Network Usage and Process
The application waits for any of a number of trigger conditions, and will execute an operation once it occurs. That's right--you can shut down your computer at the end of the day, and not have to wait for it to boot in the morning. Simply have Shutdown Timer wake it up a few moments before you come into the office. If you use a password to log in to Windows, Shutdown Timer won't log in for you, but you will still save a few moments of sitting there and staring at the screen while your computer boots.

K-Lite mega Codec pack

We all at one time or another have had the issue whereby we want to watch a video clip and we can`t because of codecs. Over the past few years developers have been trying to come up with a video format that occupy as little space as possible without compromising the quality. This has given birth to formats such as matroska video(.mkv),  Adobe flash video(.flv), DVix, Xvid, avi, ogg, mp4, real media video, m4v, among many others. Whenever you try to watch a movie in one of these formats you are asked to download a codec that supports that format or a media player. The solution to all these media formats is called K-Lite mega codec pack. K-Lite mega codec pack has codecs that supports all these and many other video formats. All you need to do is to download it and install it, and that`s it. the codecs will be available to any installed media  player and you`ll be able to watch any video you want in any format. K-Lite mega codec pack also comes with a media player classic home cinema. The other good feature is that it support x86 and 64-bit systems

Free Network Attached Storage

Hi guys, I`d like to apologize for going MIA  for a while. From today I`II be posting new posts everyday. Now down to business. We all like to upgrade computers or buy news. Most of the time we always look for another buyer to purchase the old PCs or we end up dumping the old PC. recently i realized that you can still make use of your old PC. The other day I came across a software called FreeNAS. FreeNAS is actually free network attached storage software. A Network attached storage is a data storage connected to a computer network. By now you`re familiar with home networks whereby you have a high-speed internet connection connected to several PCs, laptops, HDTV or smart phones at home either wired or wireless. You can further improve this network by adding a network attached storage in this home network where you`ll be storing  movies, music, and media files that can be accessed anywhere within the network. Manufacturers such as HP have products like HP EX470 MediaSmart Server which serve the same purpose but at a much higher cost. FreeNAS is more cost effective because it adds these features to your old PC at very little cost. FreeNas is a freeware and anyone can download it any time and follow the instructions on how to implement it. the basic feature set that comes with freeNas are
  1. Web User interface
  2. Command Line Interface
  3. Zeta File System
  4. Snap Shots
  5. Backup and Restore
  6. 10Gig Ether drivers
  7. Thin provisioning
  8. File sharing and many others

The other really good feature about it is once you have installed and it`s running. It doesn`t need a keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected for it to work. It can be accessed remotely through a command line or a web interface.

Game Booster

If you`re a true gamer then you`ll understand why we always want our PCs have to perform at 97% of it`s capability. We overclock processors, change or improve the chassis cooling system, among many other tweaks. A couple of months ago i read on some forum about a software called Game booster from IObit. I downloaded it and it  allowed me to shut down unnecessary system processes and a couple of programs. This enabled a couple FPS to be squeezed in on prototype. Back then it was free and had a few features. the latest Game booster has all the features available in the previous version but enhanced, can defragment game files, and tweak the system.

Re- Enable

Recently my PC got infected by the Trojan that infects Autorun.inf file. Basically this Trojan has a habit of disabling the task manager, device manager, registry editor, system restore among many other administrative functions. The first time i got infected with this a similar Trojan, it had not gone as far as disabling the registry, so i cleaned it with an anti-virus then had to re-enable the other administrative functions in the registry. Trust me, if you don`t know your way around the registry you will have trouble doing this. Tangosoft.co.uk came up with Re-Enable which simplifies the whole process of re enabling administrative function by a simple click. It is so simple and straight forward to use.
  Screen shot;
The software has the capability to restore functionality to these Windows features
1. Windows Registry
2. Command Line Tool
3. Windows Task Manager
4. System Restore Config
5. Folder Options
6. Run command
7. My Computer
8. Task Scheduler
9. Right Click Context menu
10. Ms-Config (Xp only)
11. Control Panel

The major requirement is that it requires a .Net framework
It`s good to have this app stored somewhere just in case you or your friend falls victim to one of those viruses or Trojans that disables administrative functionality.

Wireshark -Network Protocol analyzer

This post goes to anyone who`s interested in networking. am currently doing a certification course on networking and i stumbled on this application called Wireshark. Wireshark in network protocol analyzer that can read/write many different capture file formats: tcpdump (libpcap), Catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, NAI Sniffer (compressed and uncompressed), Sniffer Pro, and NetXray, Network Instruments Observer, Novell LANalyzer, RADCOM WAN/LAN Analyzer, Shomiti/Finisar Surveyor, Tektronix K12xx, Visual Networks Visual UpTime, and WildPackets EtherPeek/TokenPeek/AiroPeek among many others. It has alot of features that i am currently still learning to use, they claim to be "The World's Most Popular Network Protocol Analyzer" and i can`t depute that.

Wireshark is great protocol analyzer and packet sniffer but the downside is that it requires basic understanding of networking and TCP/IP. To download a copy click here.

Optimize your memory with MINIMEM

We all have been in a situation whereby you run a certain program, then the PC really slows down. Since am a developer i run mozilla firefox and Netbeans IDE simultaneously most of the time when working on a project, Mozilla alone used to consume up to 400MB of physical memory and when you add Netbeans in the mix, life became less interesting. that was until i discovered Minimem. Minimen is a freeware from Kerkia that optimizes memory usage to improve performance and response rate. It enables the user to choose a program and limit the max physical memory it can use. Minimem did help me sought out the issues such as Mozilla memory footprint and allowed me to run other applications simultaneously. it unfortunately it is available on windows only

ZDbox app for android

Hi guys it`s been quite a while since my last post thanks to some thugs who stole Telkom cables. for the next two weeks i`ii be posting articles daily to try to compensate for the lost time, anyway lets get to business. with the android becoming popular, really cool apps get developed, an example is ZDbox. ZDbox for Android is an "all-in-one" toolbox app that makes it easy to find out what's going on in your phone: you get exact battery percentage and traffic usage (with alerts!) and can set a do not disturb time range, lock apps (like Gmail or messaging) and batch uninstall unwanted apps. Super easy to use. Still in beta but works really well.

Optimize your PC with CCleaner

Every wants their PC to always perform at the most optimum level, this has made guys purchase and download PC optimization tools that cost quit alot such as TuneUp utilities. some even use Command prompt to optimize their PC`s. Am not saying that all these softwares are useless. some of them are very useful but at a cost. My solution is a software called CCleaner, i recommend it to you all, the first time i used it, it removed 3 GB of useless temporary files that was clogging my hard drive, and i was able to optimize my registry. CCleaner clears out temporary files, cleans the Windows Registry, erases browser histories, enables you to edit the start up menu, system restore, wipe your hard drive among many others. for more information on CCleaner click here.

Since CCleaner is a freeware you can download it Here  and i insist it is a MUST HAVE if you want to optimize your PC

SALUTO Anti-frustration software

for the few of us who still run XP. ever had an issue whereby your PC takes too long to boot. Saluto has developed an anti-frustration software that is going to relieve off some of your frustrations.

In a editorial review of saluto by Preston Gralla of PC world, he explains that;

Soluto runs in the background and watches what programs and services load when you log in. It then analyzes how long each of them takes, and categorizes them according to whether they are required for Windows, potentially removable from Windows boot, or are instead a "No-brainer" that can easily be removed from boot. It bases this information on what the company calls the Soluto PC Genome, a database about many PC applications that the company has put together.
It then shows you details about each application and service, by category of whether they can be removed each of those programs, and lets you determine whether you want to allow the program to remain in the Windows boot, whether you want to Pause it (which means you'll have to start the program manually), or whether you want to delay it, which means that Soluto will allow the program to load, but not at boot time. In that way, you'll boot more quickly, but the program will still be available after several minutes.
I found that Soluto worked quite well. It cut about 30 seconds from my normal boot time of around three minutes and fifteen seconds.
